چکیده

We combine theoretical results from polytope domain meshing, generalized barycentric coordinates, and finite element exterior calculus to construct scalar- and vector-valued basis functions for conforming finite element methods on generic convex polytope meshes in dimensions 2 and 3. Our construction recovers well-known bases for the lowest order Nédélec, Raviart-Thomas, and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini elements on simplicial meshes and generalizes the notion of Whitney forms to non-simplicial convex polygons and polyhedra. We show that our basis functions lie in the correct function space with regards to global continuity and that they reproduce the requisite polynomial differential forms described by finite element exterior calculus. We present a method to count the number of basis functions required to ensure these two key properties.

An extension of the Crouzeix-Raviart space to general meshes with application to quasi-incompressible linear elasticity and Stokes flow

In this work we introduce a discrete functional space on general polygonal or polyhedral meshes which mimics two important properties of the standard Crouzeix–Raviart space, namely the continuity of mean values at interfaces and the existence of an interpolator which preserves the mean value of the gradient inside each element. The construction borrows ideas from both Cell Centered Galerkin and...

Interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method on very general polygonal and polyhedral meshes

Abstract. This paper provides a theoretical foundation for interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for second order elliptic equations on very general polygonal or polyhedral meshes. The mesh can be composed of any polygons or polyhedra which satisfies certain shape regularity conditions characterized in a recent paper by two of the authors in [18]. The usual H conforming finite element...

Local flux mimetic finite difference methods

We develop a local flux mimetic finite difference method for second order elliptic equations with full tensor coefficients on polyhedral meshes. To approximate the velocity (vector variable), the method uses two degrees of freedom per element edge in two dimensions and n degrees of freedom per n-gonal mesh face in three dimensions. To approximate the pressure (scalar variable), the method uses ...

Convergence of Mimetic Finite Difference Method for Diffusion Problems on Polyhedral Meshes

The main goal of this paper is to establish the convergence of mimetic discretizations of the firstorder system that describes linear stationary diffusion on general polyhedral meshes. The main idea of the mimetic finite difference (MFD) method is to mimic the underlying properties of the original continuum differential operators, e.g. conservation laws, solution symmetries, and the fundamental...

Convergence of the Mimetic Finite Difference Method for Diffusion Problems on Polyhedral Meshes

The stability and convergence properties of the mimetic finite difference method for diffusion-type problems on polyhedral meshes are analyzed. The optimal convergence rates for the scalar and vector variables in the mixed formulation of the problem are proved.
